I have reciently been offroading and found a masterpiece out in a field. It looks to be a chrylser big block, i'm not sure what but it is out there. I'm going to go out and pull it in to the shop in a few days. I know it will need a massive rebuild (sitting without carburetor or exhaust manifolds in field for who knows how long, it is fuel injected though.

What would the potentials for a bigblock be? If this were your truck would you keep your 318 or put in this motor.

I guess I will have to get in and tear it appart to see what is happening with it but i'm not that woried.

What do you think it would cost to turn this motor into a carbureted version?

Thanks for the help anyone can offer,
Eric

It isn't a hemi the valve covers gave that away (unfortinatly) but it is likely to be 440 from the 80s out of an RV (i think that is what he was saying it was about 4 months ago), one of my friends ran numbers and that is what it came to be. Rigged for fuel injection though, how hard would it be to switch to carbureted?

Would this be a good motor to play in the mud with?

Thanks,
Eric

440 to go

I didnt know they made a 440 Hemi, but then Im not a Mopar officiando. I would make a stab at saying any after market of pre fuel injection intake that was made for that engine should fit right on it, as well as ignition system. I cant really picture them going to all the expense of changing the intake port and bolt pattern on the intake to go to FI.

no, you are confused I think (not to be rude or anything) but the only hemi they made that i care about is a 426, this is a 440 (not a hemi, no boots in the valve covers.

Sorry if I led this wrong but I couldn't see where.

Got my head else where

No problem. That was my error, on the Hemi thing. Wasnt thinking straight.

As for the 440, I do know they were a pretty good engine, and theres a lot of goodies out there for them.

A 440 six pack would be just the bomb.

do they usually produce alot of low end torque (needed for the mud)? What about the dual 4 barrel, i've only 2 2barrels lying around and about 7 and a half 4 barrels lying around (one has served as parts.

Low and mid range Torque are the 440's stock in trade. Edelbrock makes a daul quad intake for the 440, part # CH-28, Summit part # EDL-5440, and they go for $ 275. RPM range is 1500-6000. A couple 500 CFM vacuum secondary carbs would get the job done real well.

Two Holley 450 CFM carbs, Part # HLY-0-9776, would also do the trick. These are chokeless carbs but with mechanical secondaries.

If it has fuel injection it isn't a 440. Also Chrysler quit making the 440 in the real early 80s. How old is the car? Can you find any numbers? Even the VIN number will tell what year and engine it is. Any good parts store can decipher it for you. Or look under the hood for an emissions decal. It will have the year and engine size on it somewhere.
