First off, I would like to say that this site is very nice. I have learned alot and i am having fun building my first engine. First question: What is the proper clearance for the oil pump pick up to the oil pan on a sbc? Second question: How do I know if my valve springs can handle the lift I want? Machine shop installed the springs. My last cam had .456/.459 lift. My new cam has .488/.502. The valve springs are the dual springs. The outside diameter is 1.275". Thats all i know. I looked at my invoice and there is no part number. I could call the machine shop, but I would rather not. The springs seem alot taller than I am used to seeing. Thanks for the help.

3/8 to 1/2 . I would ask the shop for details on the springs. The shop should not have installed them without knowing the requirements of the cam.

Thanks for the reply. I decided to go to a different cam after I got the engine back.
