(Newbie here)

Hello ppl,

Alright well it all started when I got my first car. It's a 78 El camino with a 305 and it's been sitting for 2 years, had rust on the block and heads nothing serious. It ran before it was parked smoked a tiny bit. Whenever I got the car I took the motor out and apart and clean it, by apart I mean I took heads off and all other things like manifold, exhaust manifold, oil pan and what have you. Well everything was going my way, I started buying new parts for it, distributor/cap, valve covers, a complete engine gasket set, Alt, Starter, good carb, new spark plugs, plug wires....and so on.I thought "YES" i'm close to finishing up, I did TDC and got close to getting the timing right just close enough to get it to fire up. Well I started the engine and it blew a little smoke out (I thought normal), after having it run for about 5 minutes it starts smoking like a house on fire. I have even ran it for 1 hour and it smokes like crazy. I read about their being different colors of smoke, if it helps the exhaust smoke was white. This was very time consuming and it really ticks me off to get all this way and find out that she (the 305) let me down.

(Can someone please tell me what exactly is causing this)

(This is the first engine i've ever rebuilt- well not rebuilt but refurbished in my life, so sorry if I sound no pro)

The most accepted cure for smoking is the patch, seems to work well. JUST KIDDING!

Welcome.

Now white smoke usually indicates coolant being burned in the cylinders. I would strongly suggest a compression and leakdown test. I bet you have a head gasket sealing issue.

White smoke is usually burning carbon from your engine, Which is a good thing, It means it's cleaning your engine out. But it shouldn't be smoking for that long. I don;t know man... Sorry:pain:

One other thing, describe in detail how you installed your intake.

I mean step by step...every last thing you did (cleaning, sealants, etc...).

you can tell if its coolant or brake/tranny fluid. Coolant doesn't burn, its ejected from the exhaust port and vaporizes on the inside of the exhaust pipes, so if you see steam that dissipates quickly, its from your head gaskets (uhh, you didn't use the old ones over did you? Did you clean the surfaces well?).

Check your coolant, its probably low and has all sorts of grimy crap in it.

Hey Lonestar,

Well I installed the intake as good as I could. Meaning I first too fine grit sand paper and softly brushed off any matter on the heads and the lips of the front and back of where the intake sits. I place the gaskets on the heads with gasket glue and also with the back seals. I place the intake on carefully, Oh, also I put gasket seal on them just to be safe of no leaks.

lol, no I didn't use the old head gaskets, and yes I cleaned the surfaces as good as I could.

What about the heads, did you check the deck?

As far as the intake, did you run a nice bead of silicone around the water passages?

Iff your white smoke has no oil smell you are getting water in your cylinders, ( steam out the exaust when there shouldnt be,).take your spark plugs out Noting where they come from and you will see a real clean plug ( cleaner than the rest) where that plug comes from is the cylinder at fault,

As you pull that head off check gasket for any unusual water marks , being a new gasket it will show up on that cylinder that you Noted, keep looking and you will find,

78 305s were prone to cracked heads....thin castings.

What type of head gasket did you use? Hope you used a fibre gasket, not a steel one. The fibre ones will help if your heads are slightly warped.

Besides having coolant leaking in to the cylinders. There is the issue of valve seals and rings on a engine that is high mileage and been setting for that long. Just cleaning the parts will not fix a smoking problem.

Did you torque the head bolts to specs?

Hey thanks for all the help.....Everyone........ I learned a few things to check and look for. I found a 305 in the American classifieds, thats been rebuilt... new piston rings, new heads, new intake and carb... Listened to it run today, sounds smooth, no ticks or back fires/miss fire.

one more thing..

Doc here:pimp:

Disconnect and plug the Vacuum line going to the tranny from the intake manifold..(assuming Automatic) And run it for 15 or 30 minutes...See if the Smoke dosen't calm down..or go away.

If it does, your Vacuum Modulator Valve is Bad, Diaphragm is torn and sucking tranny fluid into the induction system...

More Suspect, If as you say the car has sat around for a few years "Rusting"...

Your Valve seals could have dried up and cracked Too sitting for so long..
