Fresh rebuild or an engine that's been in storage, or ?
Priming the oil system, using the correct lubricant additives, coating the cam lobes/lifters w/break in grease, etc. are all important. If the cam is new the engine cannot idle for about the first 30 minutes, engine speed varying and above 2000 rpm.

There are several brands of break-in oil. ROYAL PURPLE BREAK-IN OIL, Brad Penn BREAK-IN OIL, COMP CAMS BREAK-IN OIL. I like the Royal Purple line best. After break-in they have a High Performance Street Motor Oil with a high level of zinc/phosphorus anti-wear additive.
