So heres my question for all you seasoned veterans...

What SBC should I consider using in my Porsche 924?

I have a conversion kit coming (hopefully) and it will bolt a SBC into my Porsche and mate it up to my torque tube and everything. Main issue is intake height vs. hood clearance.

I am pretty sure that using an LT1 is the way to go, many have done this already. Not being an engine builder myself I am looking to get a crate motor with a low rise manifold. I prefer to go with carbs rather than the FI but I do not want to have to add some hideous hood scoop to allow for the intake height.

From what I have read an LS1 has some issues with the crossmember in the car so I have ruled that one out.

I am looking to get near 400hp and need it to be reliable...would like bulletproof, but you know what I mean.

i dont know about these import v8 conversions. you know i heard of a guy that put a 350 in a 280z. i dont know if he ever got it to run.

watch your hood clearance.

probably have to alter the tunnel and trans,shifter location.

You dont have to be an engine builder to get an engine built the way you want it. I would not go with a crate motor, only because with a designed motor, you can get exactly what you are looking for. I would go with a 383 with Vortec heads and a comp XE274H cam. This setup would put you at around 425 hp and close to 500 ft lbs of torqe. As far as the intake goes, I would guess that a low profile fuel injection would probably be the only way to to, but I am not sure what is out there as far as fuel injection goes. As far as the rotating assembly, I would go with this setup, http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=4090&prmenbr=361 You will never hurt it with 400-450 hp. As far as a good engine shop goes, I would check out www.revolutionaryperformance.com What does it hurt to see what they could build you a custom motor for, it will also be higher quality work than a crate motor.

check out this article and replace the rods they use with 6.385" eagle sir rods on ebay stores for 250.00.this motor is absolutely perfect for what you want and i did see a datson 280 with a 450 h.p. 406 sbc that was gorgeous in chevy high performance.

Not to be a jerk, but I'm tired of hearing about this "350 chevy should have built." Its not awesome. In fact, its not really that great at all, and not even as good of a choice as the 350 chevy did build for the street. Here's proof-

You'll notice that a regular, human style 350 was built by AFR. They didn't have to use a roller cam like the magic 350, and they used heads that had an intake runner of 180cc instead of the magic 350's 190 cc heads (both AFR heads, btw).

So we have a normal 350 with 10cc smaller heads of the same make and model, and a NON ROLLER version of the same cam they used in magic 350. Results?

Well the normal 350 made about 35 lb feet more torque and about 20 more horse. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!:p

Seriously though, they even had to waste a 400 block on this motor! A regular 350 is cheaper and made more power.

That motor is the 350 chevy is glad it didn't build.

More is welcome for sure. Like I said I don't have the conversion kit yet but I like to get a jump on things so if anyone else has suggestions let 'er rip.

Those of you unfamiliar with the Porsche 924 picture this...

400+ hp in a 2200 lbs wide body (mostly carbon fiber) chassis built on a base that is infamous for out handling all other Porsches with it's 52/48 weight distribution (with V8 in place of 4 cylinder), 5 speed LSD trans (from 944 Turbo), Magnesium BBS 3 pc wheels (8" fronts, 9" rears), all lexan windows, and all spherical bearing suspension with sway bars, camber plates, and 10 point full cage.

You may or may not be able to appreciate it now, but when I'm done I bet you will.
