the engine is a 305 chevy its in a 59 impala with a powerglide automatic transmission the engine shuts off when its put in to gear. it starts up and idles good but it dies when put in to drive. i have double checked the timing, adjusted the valves, checked my points, adjusted my carb, and even changed my intake because it is still not pulling enough vacuum its pulling about ten when it should be at twenty.

Do a compression test and a leak down test to see if that shows any problems before you spend much more time with it.
Does it kill even when you let it warm up?

What about your neutral safety switch? is it adjusted properly?

Did it work at one time, and doesn't now? and if so, did you do any work on it between then and now that may have caused the problem?
ALL THAT CHECKING THE TIMING AND SUCH IS A WASTE OF TIME I THINK. A PROBLEM LIKE THAT IS ALMOST ALWAYS ELECTRICAL. LIKE A DEAD SHORT. WHEN IT DIES LEAVE THE KEY ON AND DO SOME DIAGNOSTICS SEE IF THERE IS POWER TO THE MONINT SEE IF THE COIL IS HOT LOOK FOR A SHORT IN YOUR HIGH VOLTAGE SYSTEM
