hey guys, I have an 82 camaro with a 73 chevy 350 in it. Engine is cammed, different head, just about nothing is stock. Anyways, I bought it off a buddy of mine a few weeks ago. He mentioned that he replaced the exhaust gasket and manifold a month or so ago. He did the right gasket but said the left looked fine, well as i'm driving down the road I kicked on the fan and exhaust starting coming through. that same day the car started sounding like a truck or an angry vw bug. Hard to explain really. Well now light smoke is coming out of the left side of the gasket/intake area. Anyone know what the hell is going on? he left me another one just in case it happened to go. i'm pretty lost, the car sounds obnoxious now and the smoke comes through the vents if I kick the fan on. (heater is removed). I take it its not too bad right now but dont want it getting worse. a buddy of mine said replace Valve cover gaskets, intake mani gaskets, carb to mani gasket and I should be good. idk...so lost. any insight helps.

First off, DO NOT drive this car until FIXED. Carbon monoxide build up will at least give you one hell of a headache and at worst kill you!!

Remove the left side exhaust manifold and replace with a good quality gasket. I have a feeling that the old gasket was damaged when re-installed and has now blown out. You should always replace an old gasket with a new one when re-assembling.

Also take a straight edge and place it on the surface of the manifold that mates up with the cyl head. If you see light between the straight edge and manifold surface, the manifold is warped and must be replaced.
If your exhaust manifolds are tube headers, these are prone to warping, esp. cheap headers. There are special gaskets that will take up a limited amount of gap (solid copper), but can be a little pricey.

When tightening up the exhaust manifold bolts, start at the center bolt and tighten in about 10-15 lbs inquirments of torque, alternating from side to side . Repeat until all bolts are tightened to the correct torque settings.

thank you, this should stop the sound thats making it sound like a truck? and the fumes entirely?
