The interior forum has been pretty boring for me lately, so I though I would spark a conversation. What is your opinion on exotic leathers?

Exotic leathers are HUGE right now. I do alot of motorcycle seats, Ive used exotic skins such as stingray, lizard, crocodile, and ostrich on bike seats. It has seem to hit the hot rod market this summer. I just covered a set of my bucket seats in white leather with genuine hornback crocodile inserts. I used the "spikey" tail of the crock on the seat back for added detail. Motorcycle guys call the spikey tail the "french tickler..." But anyway, I have a '37 coming in for a full interior that will have some snake skin used in it. The '37 roadster is going to have a long flowing console starting at the back deck lid, so I am using a genuine python skin on the top of the console. After another customer saw the crocodile seats, we started talking about using a crockodile as an insert for his headliner, with the tail spikes pointing downward. Here are some pics:

First let me say it was a pleasure to meet you at the Nats. Your work is spectacular.

I have thought of using exotics but I'm afraid I have more of a champaign taste on a beer budget. Even Ultra-leather is pretty pricey for me, and I'm using that on my door panels and headliner. Should be interesting since interior work is something I've always left to the pros like you. Since the truck's a driver I won't feel too bad if I screw something up learning how to do it.

That ought to be a nice fit. I once seen a Dually truck that was done in Ostrich through out, and I have to admit, it was very nice. Isn't Paul Adkins 46 done in leopard skin? thinking I seen a few pics, and it looks good also.
The only problem I see, is as with anything, Fads come and go, and if you have an exotic interior, you'll likely own it for a while or loose if that fad went away when it came time to sell.
Fortunately their are tons of people out there that have the "deep pockets" and can afford to do those types interiors, for us little guys to gaze at and wish.. LOL
What about the durability of such "skins"? Will they hold up to a lot? Getting in and out of cars can take a toll on the best of leathers, so are these exotic hides any better?

Most exotic hides are going to have the same durability as regular leather. The tail sections of the crock and gator can get kinda brittle though. Paul Atkins interior has ultrasuede inserts that have a leopard print on them. Its not real leopard.

Aw now I know. LOL It would be nice to have something like that, but like I said, too pricey for me. But what little work I've seen of yours, you do fine work, adn what ever you do with the exotics, it'll be nice. Send some pics of anything you do.
