I have done a lot of flames using the base coat clear coat system of paint and they have always turned out well.

I am wondering if you could do flames using a strait urathane or enamel paint with no clear? Spray your urethane or enamel and let your last coat dry for an hour, tape off your flames, spray, let that paint dry for an hour, pull your tape, let the whole thing dry for 24 hours before putting the car into service. Would this work??

Jim, yes it would work. You can spray flames in any medium, 1 stage or two stage paint. The only downfall of spraying flames with a one stage paint is you will have a tape lip or edge on your flames, no matter how well you color/wet sand them. By usng a one stage paint you don't have the option of color/wet sanding the lip away withough destroying the flame, so the lip will always be there. unless you are good with a sword brush or the alternative is pinstriping tape. Of course you won't have the option of deepening the paint job with clear either.

In short to answer your question, yes, it can be done, just doesn't look/last as well.

I'd have to second that! I've outlined flames a few times and with the paint edge way, even with a strip, you can still feel the edge where the paint piled up. It depends how "stickley" you want to be. I did outline pinstipe flames on the fenders of mine. You can feel them when you wash the truck, but who cares. It's a daily driver!

You Put Enough Clear On The Bump Will Go Away-----just Sand The Edge Of The Flames Down---slowly.

I know the other guys are saying you can't clear over the single stage....but i know you can clear over Dupont's Nason single stage. I don't really see the point, since basecoat won't pile up as high as single stage, but it can be done.
