I have a 49 Ford flathead V8 that has been equipped with a 68 mustang C-4 automatic trans. It seems to work fine, but there are a few things I don't understand. It uses the same column shifter, except like you were putting it in manual low, you are in drive. The old neutral is reverse gear. Neutral is a tic up from reverse and it starts in any gear, which is a little tricky. Has anyone ever done this before or heard of it? I just bought the car and am going over it so I haven't had it out on the highway yet.
Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated

Lots of people used the original 3 speed column shifter like that.
at one time in the past modern floor shifters weren’t available yet.
And some didn’t want to build a floor conversion or cut up the floor.
‘You adapted what you had.
