I own a '77 Ford F-100 that I put a Chevy 355 / TH400 combo in. Currently the speedo is not hooked up. Is there an easy way to hook up a GM tranny to a Ford speedo, or should I go aftermarket?

If I should go aftermarket, what is the best brand to go with? I really do not want digital, so something retro would be great - but as always I am looking for cheap! :D

Any good speedometer shop should be able to make you up a cable.

I have NEVER owned a Ford newer than about 1960 ... but the older Fords used the same speedometer fitting and setup on the transmission as the Turbo 400. The stock cables WORK on a 56 Ford F-100 with a Chevy Automatic with a cable driven unit. Maybe on yours also ... :confused:

If you decide aftermarket is the way - then Classic, VDO and Auto Meter seem to be the best known. VDO has a pretty good world wide reputation. Cheap - none really are.

Maybe I just contacted the wrong cable shop! :rolleyes:

Do you have a stock original cable for it ???

Most good parts houses carry replacements for 20 dollars or so. I have a good working relationship with the local parts house and the guy will pull a part and let me LOOK at it before I buy it.

I would think that a 77 F-100 cable would fit a lot of different Fords.



This cable happens to be a 77 Chevrolet pickup cable ... but the end shows what a Turbo 400 speedometer fitting looks like. I use a cable like this in my 32 Fords with a Stewart Warner speedometer and a Chevy automatic transmission. Works out great ...

A decent parts guy could fix you up ( I do not mean Advance, Auto Zone, O'Reilys chain stores ... I mean a REAL parts store where the guys know how to work on cars. ;) The chain stores have folks who can maybe use a computer and were selling french fries at the burger joint a few weeks ago.

NAPA supplies bulk cable, cable housing, ferrules, and nuts in their Balkamp product line. Using that, you should be able to build a new cable or perhaps modify your existing one,

Speedometers are about the easiest part of a rod build when you get into them. There are so many options with all the after market items available. I am using the original 1936 speedometer in my coupe and the original housing. The other end is hooked to a 700R4 by way of a Ron Francis speed generator that is powering the 700R4 lockup computer. I took the car to a speedometer specialist that put the rear wheels on a dynometer and turned them at 60mph. He took the speedometer reading (around 80 mph) and cut an adapter gear that fastened into the speed generator and the 36 housing fasten into it. Viola!!! A very accurate cable driven 36 speedometer is on the road again for $80. The truck has a programable electric taking its signals from the same type of pulse generator that is in the coupe. This setup came with a $480 (1990) instrument package that included the speed generator and all the other gages and sensors..
