Alright folks .. here's a problem

I got a '76 Fiat Spider (yes exactly those Italian roadsters with that infamous prone to rust metal).

Once I strip all the paint off .. how should I do it after that ... in order to lkeep the metal good .. forever ??

I figured hmmmm

1) Strip it
2) Smooth it as much as possible (do the body hammering here)
3) Etching
4) Epoxy primer


Am I on the right track ? And yeah I won't be painting the car for some time ... got way too much work left on it

I have often heard it said that these cars - and others - were made from an inferior metal.

The truth is that they suffered from old paint/primer technology.

Use an expoy to seal the bare metal. And once you have finished painting have a hot sprayed urethane undercoating applied.

So I shouldn't use etching underneath the primer ... or ... self etching primer ?


As far as the undercoating goes, not my biggest concern really .. since I'll do all the suspension and chassis parts in rust stopper plus chassis paint.

Regarding inferior metal or paint... well... that is hard to say actually ... most people say that the metal was bad .. the one they used in the '70's ... however the paint was actually good.

Now to contradict that ... spots I've sanded before haven't really been rusting at all

But ... one of the rocker panels is .. was.. rusted beyond recognition


The car has always been a California vehicle .. but... the first owner had it parked for quite some time by the ocean I guess

I have to see if I can find the digital camera ... I need your guys opinion on something .. my front fender .. if it may have been a bondo coverup repair job at one time.. or if it's the original primer and paint


See the area above the left front wheel.. is cracked ... looks like a spider web design in the paint

You don't need an etch under epoxy. They swear by Picklex over on the autobodyshop forum. Something worth looking into if you ask me.

Getting back to the metal issue my point was that these or any other cars were not made to last 20- 30 years. And the cars that rusted out were foreign cars from areas without harsh winters and where they didn't use salt on the roads.

The cars had pretty poor paint jobs - they looked good but seams were often not sealed, and paint often did not cover internal areas as it was hand sprayed. Thats' why these cars got a reputation for rusting. They lacked the extra detail and build quality that allowed North Amercian cars to last a little bit longer.

I don't think the metal had anything to do with it.
