Anybody took a body off with one engine hoist? I'm thinking of lifting the front maybe a foot or two then adding blocks/timber under it. Then go to the back and raise it 3-4 ft with timber/blocks. Then go back to the front until I can slide the chasis out from under it. Will this work?

Actually I have used my floor jack for lifting the body..put some blocking between the body and the floor jack so you do not damge the rockers..and then timber like you propose until it is high enough to roll the chassis out..

Egine hoist can work as well..just being careful to not allow anything to slip while lifting..:thumbup:

You will probably find at least one body bolt or wire or cable that was missed when tkaing the fasteners out so watch for that..

Well, I haven't pulled the engine/tranny yet so, when I get the hoist, I would pull engine and lift body. But thanks for the advice.

Removing the glass

actually I think it woudl be a good idea..bodies can twist once they are off of the frame and the glass could crack in that case..one of those be safe or sorry deals..

I do not have a clue as to how far you are going in your restoration but if it is a complete retoration the interior comes out the doors come off the trunk lid is removed..until all there is is the body shell itself..

Body shell is then removed..

The parts are then cleaned and repaired as necessary and reinstalled in the order they came off..

That is a quick overview of the process..

Well I plan on a framed off driver. I have the car pretty much gutted now. Hood, fenders, doors, trunklid, seats. The steering column, dash, and glass are still in it. Oh and the gas tank is still attached.

First off what kind of car is it? Secondly, depending on the extent of the restoration you can leave the glass in or you can remove it. It is entirely up to you as how far you want to go there. Glass is actually a structural part of a car. BUT...if you are going to put it on a rotisserie, be flipping it all around, hammering, and/or welding near the glass, I would remove it. With it out you can clean all of the channels, repair any rust that you may not be able to see, replace any moulding clips if there is any, and overall make it just a somewhat cleaner job.

I will just sit the body on blocks until I have my chasis finished. The only thing I will do with the body off of the frame is finish the underbody. This way I will not have to remove the body again. I'll leave the glass in and continue on my frame off. Thanks guys.

When I removed my body from the frame (38 Chev Coupe) I built 4 saw horses and placed then strategically on each side/end of the car. Used hydralic jack to raise until I could get two 8 ft 4x4 between the body and frame, then rolled the frame out from under the body. I had to do this twice since I bought a new house and had to move the car. Worked fine in both cases. I placed a brace across the trunk opening for raising the rear and used an engine hoist to raise it. You will have to make a couple of passes at each end to keep from getting the angle of the body/frame at too severe of an angle, in which case it will slide on you. You can put it back on in the same way (don't remove the brace in the trunk opening)

To answer your original question...yes you can lift the body off with an engine hoist. Best bet is to use it at the opposite end of the way you are going to rioll the chassis out. To wheel the hoist from one end to the other would be a real pain though. I would make sure you have a few other people around to help out. MAKE SURE EVERTHING IS UNHOOKED before you attempt to lift it. Fuel lines, wires, etc.

I built a wooden frame

The frame had cross members and I used two come-alongs to lift the body and roll the chassy out then set the body down on jack-stands for my 4X4(bigger jack stands than normal) With the come-alongs still attached just in case....it didn't slip or fall but I wasn't to sure it would stay put on the jack stands.
