JB,
One suggestion is that when you cut it do not make a straight cut,I'll try explain cut down half way, then cut back 4" or 5" then finish cutting down the rest of the way. This is a little more trouble but it makes a stronger joint. That is for a box frame if it is a C frame you can just add a boxing plate to the backside
Also pick a straight part of the frame.

Is the wheelbase the same/ If it is then you can get away with hacking off the frame horns at the very rear with a sawzall/torch/beaver/etc...
If you have to cut in the middle of the frame, measure,measure,measure...then when you are sure you got it, measure again. There are too many times when I've seen frame swaps that are crooked or the wheelbase from one side to the other are different or twisted up.
I agree with HR31 on the cut also...It gives you more contact area to weld on, if you don't understand the concept, try it with a piece of 2x6 wood and some wood glue, then cut the 2x6 straight across and try to glue them back together...you'll get it.
Good Luck.

Streettrucks magazine did a two part article on this job. (Oct/Nov 2000 issues) They cut as described above and doubled up the frame for strength. If you Get ahold of these issues you will have everything you need to know. I am doing the smae to my 66 f-100. Turner enterprises (909)926-1729 in Cal. did the job.

thanks for the help guys.

the frame is a C-channel and i plan on welding a plate on the inside of the rail. i have to shorten the frame because the wheelbase is too long.

here's another item. I plan on channeling the car. Don't know yet for sure, but i think i may have to cut off some of the frame rail at the end of the frame because of the sloped back of the car. the problem is that the leaf supports are pretty much right at the end of the frame rail. i have some shorter leafs that i could switch out, but i'm worried about making a new mount further up the frame rail. anyone have any suggestions on how to do this? I was thinking i could box the frame and put shackles on there to attach the spring to? ???

thanks again,

JB

Are you planning on keeping the leaf springs or is it a possibility that you may want to 4 link the rearend in the future?
If you are planning on 4linking it in the future you may want to 4 link it first then channel it...if you are going to keep the leafs you might want to try to find some shorter leafs from a different vehicle, or have some made at a fab shop.
