Am I being anal or is removing my rattle cans from my unheated garage a good idea? I have been boxing them up and storing them in the basement until the whether warms up. Do I really need to do this or would the paint be ok if I left them in the garage all year round?

I have never had a problem with paint but the aresol lubricants and cleaners that seem to loose there preassure after they get cold, PB blaster especially, but only after you use it once.

Do you mean that the unused cans would be ok but anything I used would not?

Or do you mean that after the first shot things go back to the way they should be?

cans that you have used will go bad quickly ( loose the preassure ), but unused cans will be fine, this is just from my experience.

I can tell you that automotive paint should NEVER be left to freeze! My garage is not finished inside. So in the fall all of my paint and polishes and such were boxed up and brought into my basement.
