why HK, being as versed in the vernacular as you are, i am a bit taken aback. aerials are french(LOL) antennaes. kind of an almost oxymoron.or something.....

Well I'm not french, I'm german and having a rough day of it

Frenching antenas is a pretty simple job. Just remove your antnae, make a sheetmetal cylender to size (for the cheap folks tomato paste cans work great) weld a bottom to the cylender. Weld in the cylender, do some metal finishing and smoothing, prime paint and mount your antenae.

I've used 1 1/2 inch ID Stainless tubing, don't forget the drain hole with tube in the bottom. Might have to create a special socket for tightening the nut at bottom, buy your antenae with this in mind.

I use scraps of exhaust tubing. Comes in many graduated sizes so you can get the look you want. As 4 jaw says, drill a small hole in the edge of the bottom of the socket to let the water out. If you put it in the trunk, braze a short length of brake line in the hole and run a rubber hose from the tube to outside the trunk.

Remember, for best effect, they should be mounted in the curve on a fender/quarter panel, etc. so a beautiful distinct oval is visible. Ideally, the antenna should be invisible in it's fully retracted position (to avoid vandals bending it) but for the "cruise" position 1 to 2 inches sticking out above the panel is most excellent. Always remember, if you have 2 antennae the should have separate controls so they can staggered in height for best visual effect. I've always used manual antennae because I'm a lo-bucker.

I'm sorry, one other thing. I believe the proper term is "Tunnelled" or "recessed" when referring to pieces that are pushed back into a made cavity so they either disappear or are only slightly visible.
The term "french" (after the number one definition of tongue kissing) means sinking and item, usually taillamps or headlamps, flush into the panel so that the trim ring is no longer there and all you see is the lens or bulb.
The younger generation of car people have embraced the "french" term to decribe darn near every modification except top chops.

By the way HK, what is a cylender ? Is it anything like an aerial ?:mwink:

These guys have got you going pretty well, I use ex tubbing myself. Another way is make the hole just big enough for the antennae to come through, with the top flat and even with the panel.paint the tip. Looks good and high tech. HTH Good Luck
