Hey I have installed a new fuel gauge in my 79 el camino. Its not reading right for some reason. Its almost like its reading backwards but not sure. There are two wires coming from the sending unit. One is grounded and the other is what I ran a new wire off of to the gauge. I have a good ground and I have a good hot wire going to the gauge. I have tried running the sending unit wire to each of the wires coming from the sending unit. Its a 0 - 90 ohm gauge. Anyone have any advice on what I am doing wrong.

Thanks

try to test your gauge with key on disconnecting the sending wire from the tank, gauge should peg to Full. Then ground the sending wire to a good bare metal ground, gauge should peg to Empty and if the above happens, gauge and wiring are good.

Ok let me ask you this just to make sure I got it right after I do the test. There are three wire hookups on the gauge. One is a ground. Second is a hot or key on. Third is the sending unit. Does the sending unit wire coming from the gauge need to be grounded or does it need to go to the other wire from the sending unit that is not a ground? Hope that makes sense.

THANKS FOR THE HELP

The third wire on the gauge(sending unit wire) needs to go to the wire at the sending unit...the one that is not the ground wire for the unit.

Are you talking about a factory gauge and is it wired just as it was from the factory. Did you purchase a new gauge from Chevy? If the answer is yes to all of my questions did you follow Coles instructions exactly? If you did you should have your answer.

I figured it out. I bought an aftermarket guage that is I think 240 -33 ohm which is for AMC and I needed a 0 - 90 ohm Which is GM. I finally found a wiring diagram that explains it all.

Thanks for the input guys. Appreciate it
