I have a 1986 Olds cutlass supreme, about a year ago, the fuel gauge started reading erratic, the car had came with idiot lights with a huge speedometer cluster, I changed it over to a gauge cluster out of a 81 cutlass calias about 2 years back, this week I finally got a new sending unit so I removed the tank and changed it, the gauge still reads the same, I filled it up and it reads a quarter tank just like it did with the old unit. I checked the grounds on both ends and improved them both, still no change, the only thing I know left is the gauge itself, I know it`s not often gauges go out, so I`m asking is there anyway I can repair mine or get it repaired? I`d rather do that then try to find another dash since this one was he** to track down, I could go to GM and see if they still carry it but I really doubt they do, any help is much appreciated.

Fowl gage!!!

Shop the junk yards....or Hemming Motor News for a yard out of your area that has your gage. I don't know of anyone rebuilding those gages though. When you were talking about it I thought it was the sending unit too.

I looked in the knowledge base and found the test, disconnect the sending unit and turn the switch on, if the gauge goes to full, it`s normal, then gound the wire and if the gauge goes to empty, it`s normal, according to the site if it does this, there`s nothing wrong with the gauge or the wiring, I did this test and the gauge responded the way the site said it would, so I`m thinking they must have sold me a bum sending unit, my brother in law who`s been a master mechanic for some years told me it could be hanging, and to just take the old unit and reconnect it, get someone to watch the gauge and move the float up and down to see how the gauge responds, so I guess I`ll be trying this today. I checked the tank upon removal and found nothing it could stick on, so I don`t know what`s going on, but it still looks as if I`ll be pumping the tank dry again since I just filled it up and removing the tank again. :smash:

I got the old unit out and connected it, then raised the float to the full mark, the gauge went to quarter tank, I moved it back to empty and it fell to empty, my brother in law suggested there maybe a problem elsewhere, he said there maybe a resistance problem and I may need to check things out behind the dash, running out of ideas here, all I know to do now is get another unit and see if it reacts the same, I dunno what gives. :smash:

fuel gauge

Try getting a 100 ohm 1 watt resistor and hooking it to the sender line and ground, It should send the gauge to the top or at least 3/4...

If it goes to 1/4 and hangs, then you may have a dirty gauge (metal shavings stuck to the magnet movement of the gauge, or dirt on the pointer pivot.) You can clean the magnet with Tape carefully, and a Shot of electrical cleaner...

You should also check for a good Tank/Sender Ground also.
