I just bought a Genie 1/2 hp garage door opener (Early Xmas present). I have never installed one before, but am sure it's not difficult. Any suggestions or hints?

Lay the tiny parts out on a flat horizontal surface that won't be disturbed while you work and read the directions. Its pretty simple stuff. Laying the stuff out helped me match the parts up to the pictures in the directions I had.

I've done dozens. Instructions are usually very good - intended for the lowest common denominator to be able to install one - so just follow them and it will be a snap.

Get a helper to help measure, hold pieces, and someone tall or a ladder. They are pretty simple. Dan

Dan, I'm ashamed of you. A real man balances the drive head on his head, standing on a 6' ladder while he tries to blindly fit the 1/4" mounting bolts through the mounting straps. Turn in your man card at the door and go to your room. You are on suspension for two days!!:nono:

Besides the usual helper stuff, there are a few more things to do.

If this is a sectional door, make sure that you balance your torsional bar above the door. You want an equal balance of up and down, whereas in the manual mode it was 70 to 75% up only.

Where you install the J bracket to the door, cut a piece of 3/4 plywood out approx. 12 X 16 and bolt this on the door with carriage bolts and then install the J bracket with longer screws through the entire door thickness. This will spread the push and pull over a larger area of the door and will eliminate screw pullouts and kinking in metal doors.

The last thing is, remove the emergency release cord that dangles down. It is very easy for someone to hook this cord with a coat hanger and open your door.

And I have a confession to make, I asked my wife for a "little" help when I installed my opener. [turns in man card] The drive head was rubbing on my bald spot and it hurt. ain: EXILED....Dan

Hey Poncho:
I bought a Genie Screw Drive door opener last Saturday. I thought I would have it up and running in two hours.:sweat: Ha Ha Ha! It took all day and three calls to 800# for final adjustment. Works great but that is my LAST.....DAVE
