Once again guys, I wasn't even alive for the "Honest" stuff, so I need to research it before commenting. Frisco is someone that I respect though, so it carries some weight for me. Plus, it really caught my eye from a semantic perspective.

Exactly. The shows you see today were'nt done by hotrodder types, they are cooked up by MARKETERS, catering to what they feel the general public wants. I would'nt want my daughter going with me to a car show and seeing Richard flipping the crowd off and trying to explain why he can get away with it. Say he does that and scares hell out of my little girl (she's 8) and she comes running up crying to me... my first reaction is gonna be to bash him over the head with whatever happens to be laying around, for being the pr*ck that he portrays. Why should I have to go to jail for assault, and he can act that way and get away with it??? Because he's a 'badboy'?? Because he has money and connections??? Hotrods are a family hobby, my daughter LOVES going to shows, she does'nt need some jerkwipe displaying his single digit IQ just because some MARKETER decided it was 'cool to be a jerk'...
Do you REALLY think the guys at OCC have to scream at each other and throw tamtrums just to get anything done? IIRC, the Jet bike show had their 'first conflict', and it was a normal gripe session kind of thing that MIGHT crop up once a week, if they are indeed building the bikes that fast. It was'nt even that big of a deal to them at the time, but when the producers saw it they LOVED the idea of portraying how dysfunctional the guys are, and made it seem like they do this sort of arguing all the time. It's also a plus that the OCC crew are mega rich and think nothing of destroying stuff that the Joe Averages that watch could never hope to keep up breaking at that rate.
Marketers also love the 'reality show' concept. No need to pay actors like they used to do with the sitcoms of the 70-80's. Just get some ppl who want their 15 minutes of TV exposure to do something shocking for maybe a chance to win what to them is a drop-in-the-bucket prize. Oh, and have them sign a waiver that they cannot get medical if they get hurt or collect syndication money down the road when they are the next re-run...
The other point is the perpetrators of this thread did'nt ask by normal means about whether they could advertise here, they just did it. As if to say "bugger off I dont care what your rules here are I'm just gonna do what I want." This 'crusade' as you call it has likely by now opened more than a few eyes as to how NOT to cater to the masses by telling them that it's better to just sit down-shut up- and like the drivel you are being spoon-fed....

Honest Charlie was one of the first Hot Rod parts mail order warehouses. He sold parts mostly by ads in Hot Rod, Car Craft and the other few original magazines in the fifties. These Magazines then were 6" X 8" inches printed on news print pages in black and white. Honest Charley gained a reputation of shipping you what you ordered promply. Most was COD and pay up front with a cashier's check. Some of the other advertisers were Moon Equipment, Isky and Chet Herbert cams, Edelbrock to name a few. Reputable parts suppliers were few. People were used to adds promising the moon because there was no "Truth in Advertising" laws then.
I know this stuf because I started reading Hot Rod in 1956.

And, at the risk of repeating myself, let me just say this again. Because I know Coker Tire, SEMA, and many other businesses and organizations must be squirming right now. Plus, we've already seen the tactics that Coker Tire tried to use on us.

For the most part of this saga I think you may be correct in your thinking, but I think I may have to call a foul on your interpretation of the Coker Blog quote.
----It?s always hot in Louisville at the NSRA Nats which is held at the Kentucky Fairgrounds and this week was no different. My partner, Honest Mike Goodman and our Head-Honest-Show guy, Honest Louis took our Honest Charley gooseneck trailer up on Monday so they could have plenty of time to set up for this important event.----
I think maybe we should give them the benefit of the doubt on this one--
It may be that they are trying to continue a time honored tradition.
I am ONLY saying this as I have read elsewhere that is how the founder of the original business behaved. Not really fair to drag this entity thru the mud at this time.
Mr. Coker (IMO) does need to answer the questions that were asked of him.
Good, bad, or indifferent, it would at this juncture be better to admit that he was a part of this---or flat deny any participation.---Either way it would improve upon the opinion I have formed of him and his business.
That being said I will now refer the the link that BstMech (Chris) posted in one of his replies.
If these uppity clowns with more money than sense are going on an 8 day cross country party that is invitation [email protected],000 each--for a charity--
Seems to me by the time the fines, booze, hotels, meals, illegal paraphanalia, buy a whirlywhopper cause your car broke, and everything else is paid---no money left for the charity
Not to mention the behavior of these idiots----Rodman in 2 accidents, and cited in both :drunk:
Kudos to the Troopers around Reno.
It would be very interesting to get any type of reports of their behavior in the rest of the states they travelled thru.

Here's my .02 on this situation....
First let me say that I did find this site from a link about this thread, but looking at the layout, it (the site) looks well done, and informative, and I decided to join up, and participate, maybe help out here and there. I especially like the way the classifieds are done, and the "auto search thingy" at the bottom of threads.
One thing that seems to be getting missed here is that GMG gets a lot of "props" for the cars they build, (just not the way they promote) but their "signiture car" the massively chopped and channeled model A coupe, was built by another young man a few years ago, and traded hands on ebay a few times, until coming into the hands of GMG. They claim to have built it, but as I understand it, just changed the engine, and resprayed it. THAT, is the main reason they catch so much flak...a general "poserness".
That being said...I think Coker Tire is getting a MAJORLY RAW DEAL here. I've dealt with them before, personally, and they treated me right. They sold a set of tires to me for the price in their old catalog because I jokingly asked if I got a discount at a show. They also took back a set of tires that a buddy bought, and had for over six months, no questions asked, just because he said he changed his mind about them. Thats customer service!
I'll admit I never saw the video...but by what I understand, his brother was on it, and G/M made a point of mentioning his last name a few times. Of course they did...It was an attempt to legitimize themselves again. I don't think Coker Tire has anything to apologize for...They had nothing to do with that video...If we were accountable for our sibling's actions, I'd be driving a Hummer instead of a Nissan!
The term "witch hunt" really comes to mind here. I think the only one that owed an apology was dodgy...HE was the one that broke the rules, not Corky Coker...but since he disappeared...the attacks were directed at Coker, and now it seems SEMA.
On a side note: If you think SEMA is going to do something about any of this...Next time a police officer appears in your rearview, and then zips past you above the posted speed limit, pull up behind him, and flash your lights, and pull him over...When he gets out of the car, tell him to write himself a ticket...That's the same reaction you would get from SEMA...Trust me, they aren't interested in hearing anything about one of their own.
Back to the subject...I see where you are going with the "Honest" thing. My grandad always used to tell me, "Boy. When a man tells you how honest he is, you'd better put your hand on your wallet!" I like this board, and would like to stick around and maybe show more pics of the hotrods, that my freinds and I build, but it would be nice if it was just a hotrod board....but there seem to be a LOT of drama posts on here. I know that a few here have mentioned that they hate the HAMB and wouldn't be caught dead on it, but Off topic & drama threads are shut down quick, and the talk returns to hot rods and customs pretty quick.
I hope no one takes offense at anything that I said...It's just an observation from an "outsider" that dropped in.

Drama posts happen in the lounge, thats why its called "the lounge". In the tech section you'll find no BS and drama posts, but straight up more-than-you-can-throw-a-wrench-at tech info.
A lot of folks dont even venture into the lounge or Off Topic, but stay in the tech section.
Check out the project journals if you havent already, they're a great way to document the build up of your rod.

I know we've never posted anything like this on Hotrodders.com before. I'm not a prude, but I do think that it needs to be pointed out that these guys are bringing their unacceptable tactics and propaganda into a healthy, honorable culture.
I've tried to keep this "above-board" but I can see that there's still a small group of people who just aren't seeing what's going on here.

Here's why I think Corky Coker, Coker Tire, Newstalgia Wheel, or SEMA will never admit any corporate backing or association with this project, no matter what. I think that Gas Monkey Garage is pushing more than just wheels and tires. They're twisting the industry with their marketing tactics.
It wasn't a coincidence that a photograph of two people wearing nothing but "Spank My Monkey" thongs got posted on our website in connection with the mainstream hotrodding media's newest venture.
There's an extremely obvious connection here between "Gas Monkey Garage", "Dodgy Monkey Media" (the production company that produced the video), and the "Spank My Monkey" slogan: insidious marketing concepts based on sexual imagery.
Our investigation of this scandal led us to a website called BearForest.com. BearForest.com is a dating website for "bears": hairy, bear-like, homosexual men. We found a profile page for "dodgymonkey", at http://www.BearForest.com/dodgymonkey , whose username and location matched the information we have on Stephen Andrews, AKA "dodgy" from Dodgy Monkey Media and DodgyMonkey.com, the company which produced the video which was posted on Hotrodders.com, which began this entire scandal. We could be wrong, but this is how it appears. dodgymonkey's profile photo on BearForest.com was an X-ray image of a man with someone else's penis in his mouth:

Earlier today, some of you may have noticed my reference to dodgy getting his "head x-rayed". Well, I just noticed that dodgymonkey's profile and photo on BearForest.com had been removed. That was quick. (a full screenshot of the profile is here: screenshot of profile)
Furthermore, in searching Google for the terms "dodgymonkey" and "bear", I can see that there are profile pages on other similar websites that appear to have been recently deleted.
People's freedom is their own, and they are free to do with it as they choose. Nevertheless, this sort of stuff simply doesn't belong on the Hotrodders Bulletin Board.

People's freedom is their own, and they are free to do with it as they choose. Nevertheless, this sort of stuff simply doesn't belong on the Hotrodders Bulletin Board.
These guys are poisoning hotrodding culture with their marketing goals, and they need to be stopped.

Organizer Andy Duncan said the event was being taped by British television so the top Britain finishers, soap opera stars Jeremy Edwards and Will Mellor, will pick the charity to give the estimated $40,000 raised.
Unlike a normal auto race, drivers in a rally are credited for reaching check points in a certain amount of time. The rules say they must abide by the speed limit.
“This is a rally. We never, never say race,” organizer Andrew Duncan said.
Duncan is a one-time British investment banker who left the corporate world to run rallies.
Other celebrities with the $13,000 entry fee, the car with the moxie to compete and the time to kill include Samuel Jackson, Nick Lachey and Hayden Christensen.

Wow the bull run is a charity event also! 13,000 a car entry, giving 40,000 to some undecided charity. What a turn around. Much like the tactic of this givaway.... Throw some small bit of your profits to charity and it makes all the bad stuff go away...
On another note, I find the last post a little over the line. A link with a NSFW (Not safe for work) on it would likely have been better than posting the images directly in a forum linked to your main page.

I'm so sorry you had to look at that image. I'm sorry if it's offensive, or if it damages our reputation, or any of our members' reputations for associating with this board. I'm extremely sorry if anyone's children had to see it.
But I'm not sorry I posted it, I think it's the right thing to do. I felt like I didn't have a choice. I can see that these guys are trying to pull evidence off of the web right now. They know we don't post porn on this site, and I think that they'll try to use that to their advantage.

I saw this whole connection going on from the first posting of the "thong" picture...I am glad that you clarified this for everyone.
I frankly do not care what people do in their own privacy, but to post junk like they did and connect it to charity is appalling. Bringing this junk to this forum is appalling also as we now have a whole group of lost youngsters that are intent on causing us problems and they are now being exposed to this filth.
I do not blame Coker Tires and David Coker for being evasive to the issue, I would not expect them to post a public apology or publicly state what actions are being taken (if any) over this.
I myself have had many problems with Subcontractors that work for me where they do something that does not fit into the scope of our business practices...when this happens I try to take care of it discreetly and, if that fails, terminate the relationship altogether (no media coverage).
The people that are cutting us down for taking action are the ones that are creating the venues for this crap in the first place...if everyone would stand up for what's right then these types of people would gradually disappear from the mainstream.

when it comes down to it, any TRUE "for charity" event should be donating at least 20% of the buy in price to the charity, or should be donating a very large % of their PROFITS to charityMagnus_Jager said:

by my math, the bullrun donanted 4.5% of their buy in price to charity
thats a pissant amount ... and in this case i see it as a case of trying to get preferential treatment for their "participants" **cough-law breakers-cough**
