Use a gasket and only enough adhesive to hold the gasket to the valve cover. If you use RTV as a gasket, apply a consistant bead around the cover and allow it to get tacky before placing it on the head. My preferance would be the gasket.
What I did was found some of those rubber gaskets with a metal insert, and then basically glued them to my valve covers using weatherstripping adhesive, let it dry totaly, and then slapped them on without anything on the bottom. They dont leak a drop and are totally reuseable.
Don't know how often these gaskets need to be removed on these engines, but if you take it off occasionally, put some wheel bearing grease on the gaskets. This stops them from sticking to the block and wrecking them.
