Give me an education on Vortec engines

Good morning,

Can someone educate me on what 'vortec heads' or 'vortec engine' means? I have always assumed that it referred to later model GM powerplants.....but I know where assuming gets me.

Please pardon my rudimentary knowledge, but I can't seem to find a distinct answer in the knowledge base, and I even noticed an article on Ford vortec heads.......so some help would be appreciated.

For explanation of Vortec heads..basically they have a better flow and combustion chamber than the older heads..
