hey, my brother needs a vehicle that gets good gas mileage and is cheap. I have been saying for him to get a fiero or something like that. We absoulutly don't want any rice and would prefer something older and maybe a truck. What do ya'll think would work good?

I have an '89 GMC S15 with a 4.3l that gets great gas mileage - well, to me anyway. 72 litre tank gets 475 kilometers in the city and 700+ on the highway. It does way better than my car ('89 Olds Cutlass Cierra FE3 3.3l).

Geo Metros are made in Korea or something by suzukie or japan by daywoo, daewu, whatever. Anyway I think they have 3 cylinders, and I've heard that the starter motor out of a Corvette has more power than the Metro.

But seriously, a early Saturn twin cam (a "2") car is a) American designed, engineered, and built
b)gets 30-34mpg when driven nice c)do a good job at fending off the Honduh Civic in the next lane. I had a black '93 coupe (sc2), 5-speed, sunroof, dang that thing was a street legal go-kart. It was straightpiped past the resonator (1st muffler) and exited just behind the back tire. It wasn't too bad cruising, maybe a little droney with the windows down and passing buildings close by, and it sounded like a p.o.ed little four banger when ya stepped on it. If they burn oil (most do) they have crappy piston rings. Otherwise a good design.

I Xed out the last 4 digits of my VIN, mine were both made in Canada. I have 237,000 miles on the 94 and it will go 2,000 miles before you have to add a quart of oil.
They were made for economy, not for power, if I want power I will drive one of my other vehicles. It takes about 14 dollars to fill up the tank on a Metro if it is empty. They run CHEAP! Require little maintenance and with the money you save driving one you might be able to afford that Corvette someday.

uh I hate to say it, but you give up milage for power, thats why the v6 engines of some car will always get less milage then the v4 of the same car, what do you consider good milage? upper 10's? 20's or 30's?
My 96 civic, yes it is japanese, is "zippy" and gets 38. My 85 VW GTI got mid 20's and HAULED A**.

If you want American and good milage, get a late 60 dodge dart or plymouth valiant (the 225 slant 6 ofcourse, I have not done this to the 270, but assume it'll work).

Put new steel plug wires on it and high temp spark plugs. convert to electric fuel pump, get the high torque starter from the chrysler cordova (the one with a 378) then get a 1000 cranking amp battery (switch to a petronix system and get an accel coil too!)

I had this combo in my 64 valiant convertable, and got 20-22 mpg
my bro did the same in his 68 valiant (I think they put electric fuel pumps in them after 66?) My dad has done this trick to many 63+ darts and valiants and its usually good for 20 mpg. The whole thing should cost you way under 350$ (depending on the coil and petronix) One word of advice, when you do this trick, it is best to REPLACE all the wiring involved. adding the higher amp battery will most certainly fry old wires... I had thought about that too, My uncle has had 5 saturns in a 2 1/2 year span, 1 was a ion the others were all '94-98 sc's(?). They seemed to be able to take a pretty good beating but none of them passed the final test which included but was not limited to flipping one in a stone quarry and other interesting stuff:sweat:

I doubt he'll want a geo, that a little too much of an offset between performance and gas mileage for him

You did specify fuel economy...didn't you?? And a PU truck is out of the question...at least a full sized PU truck...they are NOT know for fuel economy. An old Dodge with a slant 6 or a 6 banger Chevy would get decent mileage...20+ I would think but not near the 30-40mpg some of the new stuff gets.

I think around 20 city 28 highway would be good (about what a fiero gets). Right now he has a '66 Pontiac Catalina 4bbl 389 and it gets about 15 and 20, we've switched the sparkplugs, put in a modified electronic ignition out of a late '70s t/a, and switched it to a 4 barrel. As long as he doesn't get throttle happy it does pretty good right now, the carb. needs to be rebuilt on it so we're expecting it'll increase more whenever we do that. It also has a 2.56 gear in it but we are wanting to switch it to a lower gear. It does good now but we don't know what it'll do with a shorter gear in it thus why I'm looking for a mileage vehicle

I had a 1974 Chevy 1/2 ton 2-wheel drive it had a 250 cid 6 and a three speed on the tree. I got 17.3 mpg on a trip out to Scott's Bluff, Nebraska with that Chevy, not too bad considering I had a tall livestock rack on the truck.

I think a S10 or any other small truck would do better. Steve claims his Toyota 4X4 would do 30 mpg but he is a slow and easy driver.

While I'm nor a F*** fan,but I have had a series of Escorts that have been great. The last two have been 91 wagons with 5speeds and 1,9 engines. 33-35 mpg, plenty of power for a 4 banger and you can fit 8' stock in it at the lumber yard ! i had the 1st 91 for 8 years with just the usual maintainance, sold it for $200 when it got too rusty. Bought another one with 72K miles at the donation yard for $350 last year. Weak points: timing belts every 70k miles and rear springs break at about 60-70K. The one I bought last year had just had springs and struts done. The funny thing was the previous owner had also had the :waterpump/radiator/hoses/thermostat replaced due to the temp gauge reading high.......turned out to be a corroded ground connection causing the gauge to read erratically.

if you're going to drive something that sucks to save gas, what's the point in going half way. If you drive something that sucks and looks like a dogpile don't get "pretty ok" gas mileage, get like 35 mpg. Drive an old jap ride if you ahve to!

If you don't mind a little kraut instead of rice, there are still a few VW Rabbit diesels left kicking for under a grand.They have a little trouble getting out of their own way but they get 50MPG.
