OK guys, I have a 67 elky with a SBC 350, mild build on the engine. Typical bolt on's, TH350, 4.10 gears, 3000 stall and a comp 286h magnum cam. I just put in a new MSD HEI pro billet distributor. I ligned everything up and installed the dizzy.

Upon firing it, I noticed the engine had a vibration that was not there before. I put the timing light on and the timing marks were barely visible, like they were not where they should be. Well, what I think I did was install the distributor one tooth off, because now when I rechecked tdc and looking at the dizzy rotor, the number one plug wire is one spot past (clockwise) where it should be, according where the rotor is now pointing. Now, I go to remove the distributor and It will not move, I can't budge it. I am letting the engine cool down hoping the metals will shrink and loosen up abit.

Any thoughts on why I can't get the dizzy out?:confused:

I have never run into a scenario where the dizzy wouldn't come out??? Did you have oil pressure when the engine was running because the bottom of the dizzy is what drives the oil pump drive shaft. I wonder if the dizzy may not have been fully seated when initially installed and when it was started wedged and bound everything up??? Just an idea...

Ok, I got the dizzy out. I lined everything to tdc and reinstalled the dizzy. I car started right away. When the engine is at operating temp, the engine now has a bad vibration, (motor rocks back and forth). I set the dizzy up with 18' total mechanicle and 18-20' initial. Now there is brown smoke coming from the tail pipes. It smells like it is running rich. I did not have this with the old dizzy. Now, I'm really confused...I checked for vacuum leaks, but found none...:confused:

Yes, I checked the firing order, everything is correct. I have the timing set at 16' initial, no more smoke and very little engine wobble. What's funny now is the starter bucks about every third start and this is a cold start. :confused:

Check your instructions with that dist. Even with Chevy, I've found that MSD specifies using PORTED vacuum instead of the usual manifold vacuum.

From the 8365 inst. sheet:
"Vacuum Advance: The vacuum advance will advance the timing up to 10° during partial throttle driving (with 15 lbs of vacuum). The vacuum line should be routed to a ported vacuum outlet above the throttle plates."

Update. Everything is fine now. I drove the Elky for about 30 minutes and pulled out the dizzy. It slipped out with no issues. It turned out my manifold bolts were really loose, all tightened up and no more engine wobble issues or black smoke. I wound up with 16' initial with 38' total, all in by 3000rpms. I changed to the lightest springs, wow, it really made a difference on the torque. :thumbup: All is good....
