The switch is in the column. You'll have to get a steering wheel puller tool kit to get it apart. (it has a puller and a horseshoe pusher for the spring loaded parts) It's not too difficult, but have an exploded view of the column if you've never done it before because it can be difficult to reassemble. Make sure you place the steering wheel back on in the same direction it was when you took it off. A floor mounted switch is not a bad idea, but I personally would take apart the column. If the signal lever feels loose, it may just be the lever (inside the column) that pushes the switch and not the switch itself. It's also good experience to learn how the column works.
