Today I was out fixing a broken frost plug on my 383 now i rplaced it with a block heater not because i do but just incase it needs to see some winter driving.Now when i popped it out red/green/brown/orange/purple sludge poured on me.Now my problem is should I a) replace the motor alltogether b)keep it and drive it or c)pull it rebuild and improve it????

this is in the water jacket area ,sounds like a ex-railroader had this motor, the purple stuff I am familar with is Nalco, is pretty stronge stuff
It will loosen casting sand, it also makes your radiator look brand new inside(shiney gold again)
they use this stuff in locomotives(they don't use antifreeze cooling system to large)to keep inside
of motor, intercooler,water pump, aftercooler, clean. We all used it but got scared when sand
started showing up after back flushing. I'm just
guessing here, to me that explaines the purple, red,and green colors you described as well as sludge. red rust.green from rad.purple-nalco
back flush, a couple times, change coolant, keep a eye out, but shouldn't have to rebuild unless
you just want to rebuild anyway

Can't comment on all those colors, but I know coolant ports in the block can get pretty ugly. I like what Pontiacman had to say about flushing it. If it was mine, unlees I was looking to rebuild anyway, I would flush the whole system as best as I could and see how it goes. As long as there isn't any other problems (head gaskets,etc.). These are the times when a good temp. gauge comes in handy. It's the best way to see how your cooling systems working.

Well thanks for the heklp guys but the motor has to come out and make room for a 440 as i took the intake off and one of the pistons broke thru the cylinder wall.It looks bad for the old 383 but shes comin out.
