well! I finally dumped out my ol' rochester I was really losing my patience with it. Now onto my next problem. I just got done Bolting up a Holley 600(4160) bought it completely rebuilt with tons of extra parts for 100 bucks :thumbup: but I bolted it up to my '84 305 H.O. Chevy and now I gots me a new problem. I started it up and she fired no problem. let her warm up a bit then I saw she was smokin' real bad so I figured I'd better lean it out. well I shut the car off for some stupid reason and turn the screw the SLIGHTEST bit and then tried to start it back up and nothing. finally I got it set back to where it was exactly and nothing. she only starts up when I hold the pedal to the floor. then it smokes like crazy when it starts and acts like it's running to rich. I've tried to lean it out(counterclockwise right?) well. if you have any suggestions on how to tune this bad boy in I'd really like to know. It's the only thing holding me up from getting the old Camaro back on the road. thanks guys

To lean the idle mixture you screw the idle adjustment screws clockwise...

Screw in = less fuel

Screw out = more fuel

if the carb in question is a 1850 series vaccuum secondary 600cfm carb
carb then youll need to adjust it as follows.
1.screw the mixture screws on each side in clockwise til they seat
very carefully
2. then turn them out 1 and a half turns, that is just a baseline.
3. hook up a vaccuum guage to a full vaccuum sourceor just listen very carefully.
4. screw the adjustment in or out 1 side at a time listening for the engine to speed up
5. when the engine speed is maxed out, reset your idle speed and your done

or.........you are leaking into the manifold when shut off, causing it to flood badly on startup. Have a look down the venturi and see if you can see it dripping in.

You cannot lean the carb out with the idle screws. They are just for the idle circuit. To lean it out under running conditions, ypu have to change jets.

I second the float level. Mine did that. It runs in my mind that most holleys like about 4 lbs of fuel pressure, you don't have a huge fuel pump or something do ya? The reason it won't fire up after you shut it off is that fuel keeps running into the intake after you've shut it down and floods the crap out of it. Probably if you'd hold it wide open and crank it would eventually start. BE careful when you set the float level while still on the car! A burning puddle of gas on the intake isn't cool.

I third the float level is to high. By the time you get it dialed in you should be an expert.

thanks so much guys I didn't expect this much feedback! I'll get cracking on that this weekend. I should set them level correct? if so then thats what I'll do. I know how to set them but not where to set them:p. well thanks soo much now my camaro will finally be ready for the road. later guys.

honestly I'm not quite sure. I think it is a float problem because I never set the levels when I got it. and I had to put the float bowl back together. my computer really doesn't control much on my engine anymore. just the ignition...everything else is gone. and it ran fine with the rochester just the rochester was going down the tubes...I should be fine with the Holley

Set the floats until the fuel is level with the bottom of the fuel level sight plug on the side of the bowl. Do it with the engine running at idle, and have a fire extinguisher handy.

1BAD asked about the Rochester that used to be on the vehicle for the better reason, You mentioned the ignition is still computer controlled, If you remove the cap and rotor you`ll notice there is no mechanical advance, without the computers aide, there is no timing advance, you`ll need a older HEI with mechanical and vacuum advance, otherwise the car will be a slug. As for the flooding issue, it`s either float level, trash in the needle and seat, or too high of fuel pressure.
