Now for question,I have a portable welder with a blown engine.could I use parts from it to make a mig? or your method easier?

Yea man!

Post up some internal pics. It will have a high power generator inside of it to supply the power. easy fix would be to buy a AC motor that has the same HP /RPM as the gas engine and you would be back up and running. If not you will need to find a 'beefy' transformer to convert line voltage for you. any questions I am happy to help.

Very nice job!! I can see from the work that you have some sort of electrical or electronic background. Keep it up. I work as an industrial electrician/electronic tech, and I would just like to put out a small disclaimer to those that might want to try to duplicate this welder, be CAREFUL. What you don't know may hurt or kill you. This guy knows what he is doing and electricity is very unforgiving, so make sure if you are going to try this you either have guidance or know what you're doing.

I'm impressed with the welder, VERY COOL.

Here is my Mig welder I built because I could not afford one.
Here is the gun a 600amp Tweco gun I got of eBay for $24
The Feeder is a Lincoln LN-9 Wire feeder ( or so I was told) bought it for scrap on eBay for $20
Nice work. Quick question. Which category are you looking in on ebay? I have an old Marquette (over 20 years old). The gun's gas supply hose is breaking down on the inside and not passing gas correctly. Sometimes it is fine, other times it acts plugged up. I have checked everything and am 99% sure I need a new gun. Problem is, I am having trouble finding one. Got to thinking that maybe I could replace the feeder with a more "popular" version so I could use a readily available gun. Maybe they don't turn up on ebay that often and you got lucky or maybe (hopefully) I am looking in the wrong place.

While I am still curious about which category to check in, my welder problem was solved today. After an unsuccessful trip to a welding supply place yesterday, I was on my way to another one today. I stopped into Steve's Wholesale Tools on my way to see what they had. Got to talking with Ron there. He suggested some places I might try. After some more talk, he showed me the Tweco Mini they had in stock. Lo and behold, it was what I was looking for. $39.95 plus tax! Back up and welding.

Nice job on the welder.
Can you tell me how your power supply works? I do have some electrical experience and can read the schematic. What I am curious about is how it maintains a constant voltage? It looks like you are adjusting the input voltage with a reactor? Any information would be appreciated. My curiosity is getting the best of me.
Thanks in advance.

Not to be a killjoy for the kiddys, but isn't this nothing more than a huge waste of time? You can get on the Net and BUY a REAL 185 amp Clarke mig for less than $400........................ so why screw around making up this conglomeration that looks like something Rube Goldberg came up with??? Oh, I know - to show yourself it could be done - right???

Hmmm..lets see..i could go out and buy a Honda Civic with a cold air intake system and 6 inch exhaust tips and a neon glow in the dark paint and the springs heated to slam it to the ground for about 4 grand....
Or i can BUILD a hotrod of my own from ground up for 4 grand or a little more that is a TRUE hotrod...where's the actual choice?..i see none....

I bet this guy has never touched a car, I've read all of his post. if he really has done all the stuff he says, he'd appreciate the inginuity of a home made welder. and I'd read from one of his post about him saying something along the lines about knowing how to build a rat rod down to every last nut and bolt like he was actually doing a REAL restoration, stupid

That sounds like sarcasm and if so it is totally out of line. If not you need to be a bit more careful in how you word a reply.

This little project is indeed a very impressive accomplishment and says a lot for the ingenuity of the builder.

I don't think he has posted for a couple of years and only 23 posts then but he sure made a neat contribution while he was here (unlike some people), it sure would be a shame if he is gone.

Hey DJ, if you are still around we really liked this thing so how about an up date?

That is the problem with a reply like that there is no way for the computer to grin and that does sound very much like sarcasm whether it was meant that way or not. Maybe not and if you say it wasn't then it wasn't but the way it is worded it could easily be taken either way. If you want to get mad for me taking it the wrong way that's entirely up to you but with posts like that you need to be a bit clearer in what you intend or it could happen more often.
