the horn on my hot rod makes a little noise whenever it wants to. the horns are out of a caddy. my question is do i need some sort of a relay?

the horn will make noise one time even with my battery switch off, and beep once every fifteen of twenty minuets with the battery switch on. so is a relay needed in the horn circuit

Aren't electrical problems fun. I think that the real problem here is the horn switch. Your horn shouldn't be doing anything without power to it. Check to see if there is any voltage going to the horn with out pushing the horn button. It should show no voltage, none. If it even shows .5 volts that is wrong. I think that it is bleeding voltage to the horn and when the coil builds up enough energy it is releasing it thus the horn sounds.
You may be able to get away with cleaning the horn switch.

I've never seen a horn used without a relay. The wiring and contacts in the horn button are not sized for a large amperage draw, so they always use a relay mounted up under the dash.

They do exist. In the old days power was run to the horn and a wire from the horn thru the column inside the tube to the horn button which when pushed grounded and completed the circuit energizing the horn. After years of being used the insulation on the wire in the column deterioated and grounded out energizing the horn . That's why you may see remote horn buttons on older cars,
Was kinda funny to see/ hear someone with a bad wire , every time they turned a corner the horn would sound !
