I'm going to put a motor together this winter that I probably won't fire up until the end of the summer, is that okay? I'm worried about the cam lube coming off the cam, I don't want to wipe it on break-in!

I think you would be ok...put plenty of lube on the lobes and bottom of lifters when you install cam BUT then dont turn the engine over if at all possible as to not wipe the the goop off the parts. Be sure to use a pint of GM engine oil supplement (EOS) and prelube the engine just before firing. Good luck

Make sure you lube the cam bearings, as well. And a top quality assembly lube, I believe in Redline.

Emphasis on PRE-LUBE before start up!!

Be sure you use a lube that won't run off. Some of the cam makers sell a runny lube that won't last as long as you need it to.

What are some good thick lubes? I have a tube of thick dark moly assembly lube, is that stuff any good for the cam?? its called "max tuff" or something like that.

Clean the oil off the cam and lifters that was put there by the manufacturers with solvent. Then wash both cam and lifter faces with dishwashing detergent and hot water. Then sit down with a can or jar of molybdenum disulphide (that black, thick grease that comes with the cam) and massage it into every part of the cam and lifters that will mate up on assembly with your hands.

Add a bottle of GM EOS to the engine oil like 327NUT said and install some worn-out stock valve springs in the heads. Use them for break-in, then change them out for the springs the manufacturer recommends to run with your cam and lifters after you've run the motor about 50 miles. Use a top quality racing motor oil that has the additives in it that have been taken out of regular oils.

A little caution now will prevent tearing the motor down to clean it out and buying another cam and lifters to do the job again.
