Stripping this down to the metal. I'm seeing 2 paint jobs here. Am I right? Its a 1971 Lincoln Mark III

Looks like 2, but could be just one that somebody stripped down before. First dark layer could be epoxy, then a primer filler, then a dark colored sealer, then a white top coat.
Maybe???

I'm refinishing this because the clearcoat was coming off in sheets

It looks like everything under the clear is sticking good. If you can feather it back with 80 on a DA, its not coming off.
Just get that nasty clear off and go to town!

I'm taking it down to the metal. That's just a small portion you see. 80% of it is completely stripped on that side

Sweet! That way you'll know for sure what you're working with.
Are you planning on epoxy, or a zinc primer over the bare metal? Or DTM?

Just like I did last year with the hearse. Epoxy primer, surfacer, sealer and then basecoat and clearcoat. Hearse came out beautiful.
