I recently "acquired" a 1960 F100 shortbox pickup....the wife had to have it...(aaarrgh).....anyway....it has a transplanted 302 with a C4 tranny I believe....(not a Ford Guy...yet)...the trans is bad so tried to order a rebuild kit....I'm asked of course what is it in? well its in a....blah blah blah....well the parts guy has no idea... finding a parts house with a knowledgable salesman is next to impossible now days.... anyway I'm told there are different year models....and nobody can tell me how to figure out what I have so I can order the correct kit. The trans is out of the truck and the only numbers I see are on the front of the pump housing...they are C4AP-7A105
A9-0 W-20

Any help would be great...thanks

Like Cliff said, there are Pan-Fill C4's with the tube coming out of the pan itself, and Case-Fill C4's with the tube going into the case on top of the pan (front passenger's side corner).

If you want to do a rebuild, the only special tools you'll need are snap-ring pliars, long-nose needle-nose pliers, a torque wrench that is accurate from 0-50ft/lbs, and the book. I picked up the Haynes Ford Automatic Transmission Manual from AutoZone. Best $14 I've spent on thae transmission. I rebuilt my C5 myself after a failed attempt from a crappy tranny shop.

Just take your time on each step and it should take you about 2-3 days. You can do it.

It is going to be difficult to I.D. the year of assembly without the I.D. assembly tag. C4AP is a casting I.D. code and will be common to most C4's. You might be better off identifying the year of the 302. Can you see the casting I.D. and date code on the right pan rail behind the starter motor?

If not, it is going to be disassembly and mix or match.

That second number means 1971. The way to read ford casting codes is that the first letter represents the decade:
C - 60's
D - 70's
E - 80's

And then the number represents the year. So your "D1...." casting code means 71. Except, it doesn't mean that the part in question was necessarily made in 71, just that that's when it was originally made. Any particular part could be newer than what its part number indicates. Every part in a ford uses this numbering system.

C-4 tranny

what spline count is the input shaft?

24 spline input shaft is an early C-4......

26 spline is 1970 to 1981... IIRC

the small shaft (3/4" or so) has 26

Sorry I was unclear... the input shaft spins , the fixed splines are the stator support for the converter.

26 splines is the 70-81 unit if you have a C-4.

Does the bell housing bolt onto the case( not the pump) or does the bell housing bolt into the pump using the same bolts as the pump?

Looks like a large bell C-4

the splines indiucate a 1970 & up unit. Should be easy to get parts for it.

Most kits are listed as 1970 to 1981

Looks like a large bell C-4. It uses the larger converter.

I am familar with the different style bell housing that is often refer'd to as a C-5 here in Arizona

The smaller bell will not accept the larger converter
