I'm looking for some advice on how to manage mixed primers on a C10 restoration. I had the cab blasted and primered with self-etching primer. The condition of the cab warranted quite a bit of patch panel repair, including an entirely new floor pan, outer A pillars, lower A pillars, outer rocker panels, kick panels and the entire lower rear section of the cab. All of these aftermarket patch panels are coated with epoxy primer.
Before welding, I remove the self-etching primer with acetone along the weld joint to get to bare metal. I remove the epoxy primer along the weld joint on the corresponding patch panel with scotch-brite wheels. After welding, I'm left with a section of cab with mixed primers. I know not to use epoxy primer over the self-etching primer but I'm not entirely sure what's best in the situation where I have sections of the cab coated with self-etched primer, epoxy primer and bare metal along the weld joint.
Once I'm done with all the patch repair, I'm planning to spray the entire cab with multiple coats of urethane 2K primer. Should I just leave the weld joints bare until I get to this point and coat it all with urethane? This will result in a base layer of self-etching primer + epoxy + urethane. I will need to use a little body filler over the urethane at some point.
Additionally, there are a lot of sections of the cab where I've done simple hole plugging and I also shaved the firewall. This requires removing the self-etching primer with acetone. Am I OK spraying the bare metal in these areas again with self-etching primer? I worry about spraying self-etching primer over the dried areas.
