This is one of the rust spots on the car I'm probably acquiring, all of the others will not be a problem, this is the one I'm worried about.

Pretty sure I'll at least have to pull the windshield stripping. Can I reinstall this myself?

I'm new to this so if theres anything you think I should know, speak up please!

pic of the spot, and thanks a bunch!

Get at it NOW!!

The sooner you fix it the least damage there will be to fix. The trim will need to come off..and if your lucky the window may not have to be pulled out but it will do nothing but get worst and start leaking water in through the hole. Then you'll need to reapaint the top.

To fix this correctly you will have to remove the trim and most likely the glass as well. What you're seeing on the surface is just the tip of the iceberg in most cases and I suspect the actual rust damage extends all the way to the metal flange that the glass mounts to. The only correct way to repair it if that's the case is to remove the damaged section and weld in new metal.

It is hard for me to tell what kind of car but I believe GM. It looks like the early eighties GM with the moulding that is pushed into the gap between the metal and glass WHILE the urethane is still wet. If that is the case, you WILL be removing the glass and replacing the moulding. And honestly as others have said, that is the only way you will be able to insure any kind of lasting repair anyway.

At this point it is very difficult to tell how bad it is, but it "may" be able to be spot blasted and treated. Hope there isn't a hole, that is a whole different ball game.

The problem is I don't have the means to fix it now, it would be spring before I could... if it was THAT bad I used to work in a body shop and they might be able to help me for cheap but I'd like to avoid that at all costs... :(

edited to say I was planning on painting the car by summer anyway, I was going to fix the spots and spray it with BB till I can afford the 'good' stuff

if I had to pay one of those window companies to put the glass back in how much could I be looking at?

Car is a 1987 Trans Am, 71000 miles tuned port 350
