hey guys, i have a 97 ford ranger that had a 2.3L and its getting a 94 ford rangers 2.3L... the problem is the sensors are different and they are built into the block.... the 94 doesnt have these... so needless to say i got huge problems...any help would be appreciated

Are you Sure they are built into the Block?

I'm not a Ford guy at all, But I can't see where that would be possible, if you consider that sensors fail, and the vehicle must meet smog. Perhaps take another look, It may only appear they are not replaceable..

If not , do you still have access to the donor Truck, it's harness and Computer? You may have to swap those too.

I assume a 97 is subject to emissions testing in CT? If so, this swap is illegal. Depending on how good the inspector is, it may not pass the visual part of the inspection.

Rule of thumb is that it's legal to put a newer motor into an older car. You can always swap "cleaner" for "dirtier", but you can't go the other way. Now, having said that, if the two years were identical in equipment, there would be no problem. Since is sounds like they aren't, you have a problem.

the truck is in tx... and emissions for that swap isnt a problem

I think what he is saying is that the 94 engine asm. does not have the provisions for some 97 engine sensor locations. Is this correct?

sensor locations are probably differant thats a couple years differance. ur best bet is to grab the engine wiring diagram for both and see what is what alldata is probably best for u.
also sometimes the sensors are in the correct spots but use differant style harnesses or perhaps flip wiring emissions is by far much differant for both those trucks. also if they repaired or replaced known faulty sensors from the almost 4 year differance. you may be better off just rebuilding ur old instead of fighting with it. i ran into that mistake a year ago i swapped motors on a 2000 escort with a 98 and everything was differant they went from a map to tps also some of the emissions provisions were differant has well has o2 sensor placement. remember next time just cause the body looks the same does not mean its engine or electrical is the same. every year they do a update from known faults and changing part manufacters and what the goverment requires for that year performance of the vechicle and gas mileage all play a role
id just go rebuild or buy that year motor itll be cheaper and faster rerouting wiring just to make it work could take weeks if u dont know what your doing btw ur ecu is probably differant

Are both engines dual plug engines? Distributorless ignition? (2 spark plugs on each cyl) I don't recall what years the changeover was. Seems like there was an 8 -10 year span for that engine model of the 2.3. The sensors are all removable. OBD I sensors have different mating connectors than OBD II. If the block and head are the same then all sensors must be moved to the older engine.
