I've got a 700R-4 in my 86 Chevy 1/2 ton. just wondering if there is anything special that needs to be down to install a TH350 in its place, or if it's pretty close to a bolt-in.

You will need to move the crossmember forward 2-1/8" and unless you are lucky and have a 9" tailshaft on the 350, you will need to change the length of your driveshaft.

Since the 700R4 has a more friendly lower gear for a 4X4 and overdrive which saves 2-3 MPG highway,why would you want to do this anyway?

You need a conversion kit to replace the t-700 with a t-350 trans and this would keep the drive shafts and cross member in same place.

because I'll be building a 350 for it with a target of around 350-400HP, and I found a rebuilt 350 for $200 that supposedly has 2000mi on the rebuild. Thought maybe it would be a good buy. Maybe not.

Not really a good swap

I swapped out a 350 and went to a 700R4 the response off the line in Low gear was so much better with the 700R4 I can't imagine using a 350, also with your new engine combo you would be pushing the limit on the 350's sprag which is a weak point.Spend your money on a Trans-Go reprograming kit for the 700R4 and a torque converter to match the engine mods and you'll be a happy guy!.
