I just went out to my shop to check one i had on the shelf. My series 3 carrier had "GM3" in a couple of places on it. One was by where the retainer pin for the cross shaft goes in. Hope this helps. What gears were on it?

i just checked and there are no such numbers on my carrier.. any chance you could set the carrier on end on a flat surface and measure the ring gear flange height from flat surface to the ring gear mounting surface? a tape measure should be close enough to tell if mine is a 2 or 3 series. I've got a ring gear on mine but measured the thickness of the flange at .340. This would be from the machined surface the ring gear bolts to, to the mchined face the bolt head sits on. Hope this helps.
