Thinking about this HFT camshaft for a mild 355 in a '72 Chevelle.

Dart ss 165 iron heads with 72cc chambers
6cc flat top pistons
9.3:1 CR
Weiand 8125 dual plane manifold
Quadrajet carb
TH350
2.73 axle ratio
1 5/8 headers with 2 1/4 dual exhaust

The cam specs are 214/214 at .050 264/264 at .007 .450/.450 lift with 1.5 rockers and has a 108 LSA

Obviously not a drag car with the 2.73 axle ratio. The car is just meant to be a nice cruiser with good drivability and low-mid torque.

Cam looks like a good match. Any thoughts?

I've got a 350 with a HE260 cam ([email protected]"), stock convertor, 3.73 rear, performer intake, 600 VS Holley, Tri-Y headers, 200R4 trans.. It pulls 15" vacuum at 650 rpm idle. Runs great from idle to about 5200rpm with good throttle response(3.73 might have something to do with that).
I didn't figure the CR back in the 1980's when it was built, but it was supposed to be around 8.8:1. The heads came from RHS back then and were stock rebuilt cast iron w/76cc chambers with pocket porting/bowl blending(?port cc).
Your cam is just a little bigger, and with 108 lsa vrs the 110 lsa mine has, I'm thinking you may have just a little less low end/idle vacuum.
I'd say it was a good choice except for the rear gear being just a bit too high.JMO

According to Dart literature the Iron Eagle SS heads exhaust flow is 61.5% of the intake flow, so if using those heads I would use a split pattern cam with a little more on the exhaust side. Consider the Isky 264/270 Mega cam or something like the Howards #112571-12, 269* intake, 279* exhaust, 215*/225*, .455"/.465", 112* LSA 108* ICL, 1200-5500 Good idle, Strong low & mid-range torque & horsepower.

thanks for that info. I was not sure the 165 darts flow well or not.

Vinnie, according to the Dart catalog the Iron Eagle SS's flow 221 cfm at .400" lift on the intake, 136 cfm at .400" lift on the exhaust, 232/138 at .500" lift, so intake flow is comparable to GM vortecs, but, like GM vortecs, the exhaust is rather poor in flow compared to the intakes. With an exhaust flow of 61.5% of intake flow a split pattern cam would be very helpful. The 180cc and larger port Iron Eagles have a much better exhaust/intake flow ratio. They're around 70-71%.

That's a great cam, and perfect for a cruiser, and should perform well right off idle to probably 5,000 rpm's. Nice to see someone choose a realistic cam that works, and not get all crazy on huge lopey cams to get a certain sound, but no performance.
