I have a 3 ton allied Jack that blew out a seal last week. There is oil coming out of the spot where the metal cylinder is that goes up and down as you pump the handle. Not the lifting cylinder, the one that is attached to the handle and pumps the fluid when you push the handle down. I am sure it is just a seal that blew out. My question is, does it take a special seal or is it just a standard o-ring? I have not had a chance to take it apart yet but was wondering what I will be getting into.

It should have an O ring and a piston cup. The O ring can be got at the hardware store, The piston cup may be available from tha manufacturer, If it is an inexpensive jack most likely won't find a cup for it. Tfy a jack repair place,And use jack oil when refilling.
No american jacks that are affordablebut can get a good one from Harbor Frieght that won;t leak. The ones from the bid box stores get thiers from china and will leak after about 10 uses, They use inferior metal on the pistons and crappy cups. The Japs make a better jack then china :welcome:

Those HF jacks don't seem to have a problem leaking UNLESS you let them get wet! The ram and the pump plunger (that part he is talking about with the cup and O-ring) are not plated and will easily rust which will in turn destroy the seals as the rough rusty metal surface passes over them. Don't let them sit in rain or leave them in a damp place.

thanks for the help guys, The jack is at least 15 years old and has way more than 10 uses from it so I know I got my money out of it. I just don't really have the money to buy a new one right now so was hopping to get it fixed. I hope the piston cup is ok because I don't think you can order parts for this jack anymore. I will pull it apart tonight and see what is bad.

I have replaced the o-ring in both of my floor jacks in the last six months, both are holding fine for now. I bought one of the cheapo o-ring assortments from Harbor Freight.

Glad to hear there is a reasonably priced quality jack still around. maybe I can convince the wife to get me one for Christmas.
