I was giving a 1954 pontiac chieftain 2 door hard top.I know I will be doing a complete shave on it because there is no chrome or stainless on it. first question is there a way to put different chrome around the lower window trim so I do not have a large gap between the window and body? or is there something else I can do?
Next there is about 1/4 to 1/2 inch drop about 6 inches wide where there stainless goes on the hood. My first thoughts were to just weld in new metal to cover the opening. But then I was worried about water getting trapped under it and rust starting.
Also how can I judge want type and how wide of rims will fit under the body?
thanks for any help <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

First question, make your own out of polished aluminum, not very hard and you can get your required result. Second question, if you really want to get rid of the recess for the hood chrome you will have to cut out the recessed area with either a saws all, a very stead hand with a cutting disc or a plasma cutter, the plasma cutter is recomended. After you remove the area you have to make a patch panel from sheetmetal and replace it. After you weld it in, smooth with grinder, smooth with a small amount of filler prime and paint. Next question choosing what type of rims is up to you and your taste as well as the theme of the car. To find how wide and tall you can go, go to a local rim shop and have them measure it with the proper tool. This tool measurement will tell you how wide you can go with what amount of offset. Other measurements will tell you how tall you can go do to steering limitations. If you need anymore help feel free to contact me.

If you can get your hands on a copy of the Nov. '02 issue of rod and custom there is an excellent article about how to find out how big of a rim you can put under your ride. Its very easy to understand and tells you how to do it with out any special tools.
