Had my HEI apart to fix the advance, I noticed the pickup coil had some free play. The coil plastic shell is keyed to fit into the unit, but the keyway is larger and allows more than 1/32" of rotation. Is that normal? I know it's not much movement, but seems that it could potentially cause engine vibration, no?

Thanks,

To answer my own question, it turned out that the loose coil was causing some rough engine operation. Being cheap :D I didn't want to spring for a new coil since this one worked... so I put a dot of silicone in the keyway to keep the coil secured to its housing. I had forgotten that the pickup coil moves with the vacuum advance, so that extra 1/16" free play was a problem. Accelerates MUCH smoother now, and just glides down the highway.

Odd problem, I might have never found it either. of course something as crazy as a loose coil would only happen to me ;)
