Any advantage to using metal etch, then primer...or just use self-etching primer?

Manual I have says to use metal etch, but what does the manual know? I have yet to see a manual paint a car.

I use the metal prep liquid (etches and leaves zinc phosphate coating) and then prime with acid etching primer but then I wear a belt and suspenders with my suit so I may be too cautious.

dont think it matters much. neither one will keep water out tho so paint asap unless you have red oxide primer. a guy at my paint shop i use sprayed this etching primer that is brown in color on his wheel wells over a year ago and he is bragging how great it is. i dont know the product however. he says its just etching primer
