A number of years ago I was in trade school for auto mechanics. The rumor was going around the shop that if you used Quaqer State motor oil, that it was sure to leave a lot of sludge in the motor, and this should be avoided at all costs. One guy points to an engine running Quaqer State that was torn down and notes the sludge. A short time after that I tore down my own engine down that had been run on Penzoil and the sludge was just as bad. Another guy tears his engine down that was running Havaline and the sludge was just as bad as the other 2. A number a years later I see Quaqer State running an ad that their oil did not leave sludge deposts and they showed an engine to prove it, so the rumor must have eventually gotten back to them. Has anyone ever dismantled an engine that wasn't covered up with sludge on the inside????? If so what type of oil were you using??

I used to re-build engines for a fleet. They used Havoline 10W30 and Valvoline 10W30 They were never sludged. Every quaker State engine that I ever tore down was. Maybe I just got the good ones and the bad ones , but thats how it was.

I've always thought Quaker State was cleaner than Pennzoil - so there's even more confusion. Obviously a lot of the blame lies with the heat range, loading and use a particular engine is subjected to throughout its lifetime, along with the frequency of maintenance it gets. Probably not really much difference between any of the big name brands of conventional oil. Now, synthetic - that's a different story, both in cleanliness and reduced wear. Like they say, "...pay (for) me now, or..."

can't sludge form from just about any oil if you don't run it long enough to burn off the condensation caused by cooling when you shut down the motor?

Valvoline is what I trust. I have found lots of sludge in Quakerstate motors and Penzoil motors. As I understand it is caused by the high Perifin content of these oils. Aparently perifin turns to carbon building into sludge. Every valvoline motor I have ever rebuilt was clean inside. I now plan to run castrol in my bike and Mobil 1 in my cars. I expect no sludge and longer service life.

hey guys! i'm going to be the good news/badnews dept. 57chevyman is right o about the "paraffin"content.it will cause an abundance of coked/cooked buildup under the intake manifold,[bad news]however,cam lobes,rod journals,main bearings,etc,etc,etc,will be slicker than the proverbial owl discards![ good news]seems that pennsylvania crude is high in paraffin content[pennzoil,quaker state,a few others] a good tip is to check out what the high end manufacturers are using and how!right now it seems that the synthetics are weighing in heavily,but not for BREAK-IN!,SEE YA ,JIMM
