Somewhere I have seen a muffler to pipe disassembly tool but cannot recall where. I need to pull my exhaust system apart to install an 'H' pipe but, of course, really horsed down on the muffler clamps and dug a groove in the muffler inlet. I don't want to use my acetylene torch for fear of damage to other pieces of my chassis. Harbor Freight doesn't seem to have one unless I missed it when I looked thru their on-line catalog. Anyone have an idea where I can find one? Or I guess I can build one if necessary, but..... :rolleyes:

Unfortunately I can't cut one side off as I have a bend about 3" from the muffler inlet and would lose my clamping surface - the other side I can cut with no problem as it has a longer straight section.

JamieK found the tool - and I really dislike buying cheap Chinese tools for too much money from Eastwood, but probably will have too.

I have a chisel, with an extra cutting edge for shearing the pipe lengthwise, but I find it really distorts everything when you hammer on it. I use a cutoff wheel on my grinder and cut through the outer pipe lengthwise and spread the pipe a bit to get it apart.

Summit Racing has a tool that clamps on either side of the connection then you tighten 2 bolts between the two which forces the two pieces apart. SUM-900652 fits 1 1/2",1 3/4", & 2" cost 33.95 SUM-900654 fits 2 1/2", 3" & 4" & costs 45.95. I do not work for Summit but was looking at these for making it easier to do my own exhaust work. muffler /tailpipe tool

I have a KD tool that uses about 10 or so tubing cutter wheels mounted on a chain. You place the chain around the pipe then squeeze the handles while you rotate the tool a inch or so. Cuts the pipe quick...russ

I don't thinki that he wants to cut the pipe, he wants to be able to take it apart with the minimum of damage to it.............

The big problem, I'm guessing, is that it is (1) rusted together just eough to not (fairly easily anyway) come apart with strong arm twisting, or (2) the ends of the pipe are crimped or crushed by the use of the clamps.

What the best option I can see then would be to "slice" the outer peice (carefully and minimally to allow re-use) as poncho says, and then take a pipe expander to "reshape" the inner and the outer pipes. Otherwise, maybe you have connections with a local exhaust place that would be able to remake a shorter extension that you could install in the place of what you cut. Either way, good luck.

muffler/tailpipe disassembye

Sorry I mis read your post..

Can you use 2 muffler clamps opposing each other on the tailpipe with 2 pieces of 1 1/2 angle iron with a 1/2 hole for threaded rod cut to a length to reach the muffler. Put some angle or flat stock against the muffler so the treaded rod will not damage it. Using a nut between the angle iron you should force the pipe out A little heat may help...russ

Guys, thanks for the ideas and tool suggestions - I'll stop at my local (real car parts) store to see if they have an "official" tool. If not, well, we'll try one of the mail order places.
I'm trying to do as little damage as possible - everything is new and as yet, unrun.

I got them apart - and used russlaferrera's suggestion. The cost was $2.97 for 2 HD 2.250clamps, two scrap pieces of 1.5x .125 angle iron, two 8" pieces of .4375 all thread, some nuts, and a little welding. It was all bolted up, the joint sprayed with WD-40, a couple of scrap pieces of steel against the mufflers to prevent damage and Voila', off they came. The left side was a bear to come apart, the right was easy. Now the fun :sweat: of building the 'H' pipe !!

I chose to weld the nut to the back of the angle iron - it makes for a less sloppy fit as it would tend to wander- and yes, it should work as you suggested.
