My 1996 Checy Z71 4L60E tranny has destroyed itself for the second time. 1st time at 52,000 miles and now at 120,000 miles. Chevy factory rep told me that GM life span is 100.000 miles and then are considered of no value to them. I don't remember ever hearing a dealer tell me that. After talking to the factory rep and him telling me that my truck has too many miles and is to old for them to do anything about helping me with a new tranny he did tell me that they would give me a good trade in. I would like to know if anyone else out there has had problems with this tranny?

4L60 Tranny

I cannot remember too many problems with this transmission in the Dealership other than a few replaced but no more than any other GM transmission with the exception of the 440 trannys years ago.
I'm not siding with the GM rep or do I have any connection with GM anymore but the age of your truck is the factor. If your truck was 4 or maybe even pushing it 5 years old they might have done a Good-Will policy and help you out. 8 years old and they just won't do anything. That's why it is important with todays vehicles of any brand to purchase an extended warranty to cover you after base warranty expires.
If your truck is still in good condition and you want to keep it I would ask the service manager to give you wholesale costs on replacing it with a SERTA unit. If they value your business they will help.
You could call the 800 customer assistance that is in your owners manual and they will assist you but I'm not sure if it may go the same direction on the answer. However I have seen cases were customers who have been loyal GM buyers over the years to recieve assistance in some cases. Good Luck!
