alright...this is my first car and im getting ready to get my license...im debating on really hooking this car up and eventually getting a new engine...or getting a new car in a year or two...but for now...here is my question

i want to make this faster but not spend 3000 on a supercharger because the car has 98,000 miles on it...but i do want to make it fast...possibly faster then an 87 Z28 Stock...(my friends car)

what are some things i can do that wont cost in the thousands to make my car faster?

Exhaust, Intake, types of them...etc...please help if you know a lot...i dont know much...lol

Get an Edelbrock catalog and check out their Performer Package. Cam/lifters, intake, add a set of headers and a Flowmaster and you're off to a good start.

Then, there's always Nitrous Oxide. Most bang for your buck available. Gotta be careful with it, but it sure works. Less is better to start off. Try a 50 HP shot. Edelbrock does NOS now too.

Don't hotrod it yet, wait till you have been driving for a while. A camaro is fast enough for someone just getting there licens. I've got a 89' camaro myself, and I love it. With the stock 305c.i. high out put engine. I can bust mastangs all day long.

and drop in some 3.73 gears.

for get about the go fast stuff like a intake system, pullies, chips.

if you have the cash. drop in a compu cam and get some heads and a real tpi intake.

the car will rock.

SUPERCHARGER.... call up procharger (www.procharger.com)and add 30-60% and its there all day the ney computercontrolled engines responds really really well to an underhood centrifugal supercharger. you will love it, just like installing a big-block in 6 hours for 2500 bucks.

go for it..

and dont listen to them Hot Rod it, thats why we are here!

Hey dude, If your car Is a tuned port injection car, I would get some vortec heads and the equivelant lower intake manifold from scoggin-dickey with just some emission legal headers and an exhaust package, you will be about 60 horse over the stock power plant, use the stock cam, and if you are wondering about price, the heads are about 450.00 a set, and the lower intake is about 380.00. these heads will work good with your 305, because they have 1.94 in. and 1.5 exhaust valves, so there won't be a shrouding problem. even without the headers, you will be 40 horse above, so you might just want to do that and see where you are.
Keep on roddin! <img src="graemlins/pimp.gif" border="0" alt="[pimp]" />

ya just a quick edit here CATBACK MY *** ! I am from canada so we don't have many emission laws here but if you can get away with it PIPES STRAIGHT BACK OFF HEADERS TO MUFFLERS OR A CUSTOM X PIPE. ONE MORE THING IF YOU DON'T HAVE A V-8 IN YOUR CAR CHANGE THE SUSPENSION
first of all.. gears make a world of difference... everyone think my car can't go cuz I have the 3.23 gear option on my 85 z (yeah I know kinda a poor engine but I know gears would make the difference) I can still beat alot of guys with those crappy gears and my engine is bagged so get 3.73 gears (don't get 4.10 unless you can hook up and you don't care about milage) Also a new engine is a good choice and when you get one I would suggest getting a carb and stick with a small block since it is an easy swap.. if you have a 5 speed then you are probably gunna blow your tranny quickly with a new engine so get a t-56, and you have to buy conversion flywheels etc etc.. Your 10 bolt should be strong but if you really feel like it get a 9 inch or 12 bolt.. Finally keep your car as is for a while and play carefully.. In the first while I had my car I hit a curb doing a fishtail (damn leaves), almost hit seveeral school buses, whent through 2 rear tires, got it so that I couldn't go anywhere without getting pulled over just because the cops new, got a warning ticket, and got a racing ticket (I was winning when I saw the cop car despite spinning several times the guy in the datsun that I raced says different but we both know who was winning) anyways now my insurance from most companies is 6100 a year cdn the lowest i have found is 4400 and if my mom moves to that company it will only be 2800 but i have to pay the increase for her an my sister for them to move. All this by 17... that is why you shouldn't worry about making your car fast yet.. I am redoing the body on mine and then I will hopefully put in a 400 smallblock. I will probably get in trouble again too but I just don't learn. Also my friend who was racing with us that day admitted to it (******* the cop never saw him), has gotten a red light ticket, and now has a photo radar ticket. He is fighting all of them and is getting nowhere. Yeah anyways enough examples of why you don't need a fast car when you are starting driving.

The part that is gonna make you smile the most is rear gears.I'd put a set of 3.73s and a set of emmissions legal shortie headers with the Y_pipe and a gutted cat.And later add a mild cam something like crane 2020.

Start with the basics and work your way up. With 98,000 miles on motor, be sure of all basic maintenance has been performed. Wires/plugs/timing/etc...Then think "added" performance..Headers/intake/chip/heads/etc...

Take one step at a time, and construct a "performance Plan of action".

CC= horsepower if your going to swap the engine get the biggest engine you can fit in there or just increase the displacement on your current it doesn’t matter how high tech it is with chips and EFI or NOS CC=HP

thats kinda weriod, i got a 89 camaro rs, and myfriend has an 87 Z28 so we like to mess with eachother and make fun of eachothers cars, but yea if your a new driver, then what you got is fast enough, i still have the normal 308 im mine. good luck with your RS

You guys realize the LAST post in this thread, until today, was 2 1/2 years ago right?
Why are we dredging up old threads to make nonsense posts?

I must agree with KentuckyCamaro

An '89 with a 305 and TBI has more than enough oomph to get yourself into more trouble than you can handle. Get used to the machine for a little while, about two months of driving. Not only will you get used to driving the car, and gain more experience behind the wheel, you will get a great feel for where the power curve is.
one of the easiest ways to bump the power up a little is the addition of a TBI spacer, readily available from Jegs for around 60 buck. The increased runner length creates a bit of a ram effect. You can gain as much as 10% in additional intake charge in the cylinders. Ram Air is another good way for power. No only will the engine be drawing in cold air, but at higher speeds it will force air into the cylinders a lot like a supercharger will. (Best way to take advantage of ram air is to build an airbox that is fed by your cowl vents, just infront of the windsheild. This is the point of highest air pressure on the whole car. Or you can do a funtional cowl-induction hood.)
DFT, feel free to ask me any questions you might have, I'd be happy to help.
