I've got a 74 Monte carlo with a Vinyl top, but the vinyl is pretty much dead. Just wiping it off causes it to flake off. I'd like to replace it myself as I've done some vinyl work before. My only problem is with the trim around the vinyl on the outside edges and along the windows. I have no Idea how this comes off and I don't want to just start pulling without being able to get it back on. Does it take a special tool? Screws? Glue? I'm sure somebody has to know? I'd greatly appreciate the help. I hope this post is understandable and not to vague. thanks.

vinal trim

I don't know what kind of trim your talking about, but on my 78 impala i have crome all aroud the windows & were the vinal meets the body. Now around the windows ( back first ) four screws held the bottem piece in and clips mounted in the window seal held the rest. By gently prying ( in a rolling motion from glass to vinal ) they poped off. The body trim was the same way.
Now if there is a proper tool to use.... I dont know, I used a screwdriver to start the proses.
I hope this helps.

Hi,
When i removed my vynl top it was shrunk to the point that it had all pulled out from under the trim. I went ahead and got a multi-function trim tool from Jc Whitney to check for rust. All the tool does is pry back the little plastic clips that hold the trim down. If your handy with a screwdriver you might be able to do it but i was afraid that i'd break the clips as they were quite fragile so i went ahead and got the tool, which worked well. I'm not sure if its the same type of trim but i hope my input can be of some help.
