I have a 79 camaro with a peg legged 3.08 rear 8.5 10 bolt. My question is,what posi unit should I get, and are they a real pain in the a.... to put in?I'm not a rear end guy, so any help would be appreicated. Thanks. :thumbup:

If it was mine i would go for a used gm unit if one could be had for a decent price or an eaton. An auburn would work ok as well just not my first choice.

I'm having trouble with my rear end too.

It's been dragging ever since I passed 50.

Whatever you do, don't use a GM Gov-Lock unit. You want a cone- or plate-style-clutch unit. If you find one marked 410408N, that's a good one (3rd series, used with 2.73 & higher ratios, including 3.08). 410409N is for highway gears.

Here's a Gov-Lock, the one to avoid:

The good ones will have either a flat, S-shaped spring in between the side gears, or 4 or 5 horizontal coil springs.

and any 8.5" one will fit and work, truck car van, all of them

so...

definitely avoid the gov lok units at ALL COSTS

they are trash and really common in the mid/late 70s and up
