I have a 68 Grand prix with a 400 that I put a hei dist. in. it has run fine for 3-4 years but lately it has been running rough. well yesterday it was running real rough and I was reving it a bit and it just quit really fast. and a puff of brown smoke came from the engine compartment. the neg cable actually melted off of the lead post clamp. what would cause this. ignition, starter, alternator or the hei coil? any clues? thanks

Short

Doc here :pimp:

Sounds like you have a short on a loose cable (burned up the weakest link) Get a new cable, Clean and tighten both cables , and check the fusible link, I'll bet it's open too..

If it won't start on new cables or interior or electrical won't work...for sure the link is bad...look for a short..

Agree with the above comments.

It sounds like you are "negatively challenged". I had a pigtail on a negative cable burn up just like that and it was because I didn't have enough good grounds in the system. I'd recommend you also check your other ground straps, etc.
