Its worth it in the long run.

Good luck. Just been down that road and have covered 1000 miles on a "new" 67. I have learnt heaps and now know every nut and bolt of the American classic. Its definitely a test of patience and skill and i can only say that it was worth it. A canadian mate of mine says i should sell it back to the USA as he recalls his youth in Oldsmobiles.
Just fixed the original gauge issues with 3 solid state 12v to 6volt transistors from jaycar electronics instead of using the old points style voltage regulator fitted behind gauge cluster.
